Sha’ao Fishing Village Renovation

Sha’ao, a small fishing village in the southwest corner of Dongtou Island, has long been inhabited by fishermen and farmers. In recent years, due to the worsening marine environment, the need for fishery resource protection, the change of demography structure, as well as the adjustment of national industrial policy and other multiple factors, the small fishing village has gradually transformed into a tourist resort destination.

The village of approximately 50 residences is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces the sea on one side. It is located in a 170-meter-deep and 100- meter-wide gorge on the coastline. The government-funded roundabout highway is located at the northern tip of the village, forming a natural visual corridor facing the sea.

Based on full knowledge of the geographical environment and the structure of the village, our scheme puts forward prudent proposals to comb and modify the public open space, communal space and private houses, trying to make use of the minimum architecture / landscape intervention combined with the natural development of ecology, living and production, to put forward a sustainable strategy for environmental space and architectural innovation, and to balance and buffer the impact of the high-speed infrastructure development and tourism capital inflow on the authentic features of this area.
