Zoo Dome Theatre

Hangzhou Zoo is a public park at the heart of West Lake Scenic District. It situates in a hilly region south of West Lake. The peaks and troughs of the hills covered by dense vegetation and scattered animal exhibits cohere the zoo’s famous landscape. As the conservation awareness grew, the old “animal circus theatre” will be suspended. In its place, the zoo management team wish to provide, to the millions of annual visitors, innovative edutainment experiences themed around animal conservation, through new media exhibition and performances. As a result, the key deliverables are a dome theatre and a promenade exhibition hall.

The plan utilized dome theatre’s unique structure, morphed it into an egg shape to coincide with its natural conservation theme. It also used the hilly natural landscape and merged it intricately with the outdoor platform, dissolving the boundary between the architecture and the surrounding landscape. Visitors could suddenly find themselves entering into the newly built Dome theatre and Promenade exhibition from any directions and routes. This Openness and Publicness infused into the architecture is an adequate strategy to cohere with the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, it is an effective means for enriching visitors’ touring experience.
