Longquan Celadon Industrial Park

Longquan, located in the mountainous area of southern Zhejiang Province, is a small town with a long history. It is renowned for its traditional celadon industry and culture. The local government wishes to curate a modern celadon themed agglomerated industrial park by including several established celadon factory plants in the area, and by building new plants for smaller workshops in amongst them. The terrain height difference within the design range is very large. Most of the target area is hilly wasteland except for several existing large factories whose walls isolate themselves from each other and the outside area.

The main purpose of the scheme is to enhance the openness of the whole area, so that the existing plants and the new plants can be combined into an integrated urban area. At the same time, the scheme is designed to add new supporting public service features. The hilly wasteland unsuitable for construction is transformed into urban public park to stimulate the surrounding outdoor life. With the celadon industry as a common theme, the scheme integrates the stand-alone vendors and isolated factory productions, and turns them into a vibrant community enriched by exhibitions, cultural events and urban life. For these purposes, the architects persuaded manufacturers to open their walls and arrange their product showrooms on both sides of the road. The road is then expanded allowing more space for pedestrians, transforming the area into a pedestrian block with brand showrooms and museums. Taking advantage of the large number of outdoor terraces and stairs, harmonising them with the overpass and slope park, the elevation difference can be transformed into a public space landscape with the distinctive local features. Moreover, the individual industrial units producing different consumer goods are connected by the leisurious outdoor atmosphere to enhance people's communication.

By combing and reshaping the urban space, our plan hopes to create a force of change, to the conservative and introverted local public life, and build a vigorous and diverse celadon industry community in the future.
