Both Hangzhou and Verona are known as the City of Love, as a result, governments of both cities wish to encourage cultural exchange programs themed around love. This mini-museum aims to overlook the cultural differences and integrate them with an expressive modernity. The building sits like a butterfly in the wood, echoing the world famous story of Butterfly Lovers that originates from Hangzhou. The main colours of red and white are used in design, which are the colours that represent warm celebration and passionate romance in Eastern and Western cultures.
Repurposed from a couple of maintenance buildings and a tunnel, the museum sits amongst the hills surrounding the Westlake. The strong presence of the architecture and highly reflective facade contrasts the surrounding hilly woodland landscape creating an interesting dialogue.
