DaiShan Island Petrochemical Base Living Quarter

The petrochemical base located on Daishan Island is planned to build a living area of 0.25 km2, providing residential, office, conference, education and other supporting services for the industrial area nearby.

Residents who live amongst the monstrous industrial facilities and in the vastly open remote island natural landscapes day in day out, crave for the well-knit scale of life in the city. To better fulfil this psychological need, a plan was confirmed to adopt an urban design approach of constructing dense road networks circulating small blocks. The plan divides the site into several small plots, and arranges residential dormitories, commercial centres, hotels, kindergartens and other functions in high density. Such a strategy is conducive to the phased construction of each plot, while creating a compact community space and a human-scaled efficient public space.

Akin to many human settlements throughout history, the plan seeks to build a city that people would want to live in next to a large industrial base on a remote island.
