The solo exhibition of artist ShenYi Lou was held in Beijing 798 Art Centre. The exhibition space is located in an Industrial Heritage protected building, built by East Germany as an international aid project, in the 798 Factory. The newly built exhibition space is a continuation of the strong presence of the original design marked by its substantial structure and symbolic interior. Through the redefinition of the interior space scale and the exhibition flow, an intricate connection is created between the art pieces and the factory architectural space.
Each segmented space is perfectly rectangular. Through the arrangement of the Rooms with different size and access, a feeling of the flowing space is created. The colours of the exhibition spaces shuffle between black and white throughout the journey, once again enhancing the feeling of moving through the spatial sequence, whilst indicating the distinctness of each section of the exhibition.
The extraordinarily long benches add a ritualistic tone to the space, where the large artworks are exhibited. Positioned in the centre of the room, the benches anchor the space, thus forming a hub that accommodates resting, communications, observations and facilitates the spontaneous engagements between audience and artwork.
Lastly, the artworks and the exhibition space completes the duet of the flow and stillness, the vibrancy and the succinctness.
