Daishan Village Renovation
Limited Resources. This declining seaside village aims to boost its economy by adding B&B Hotel and restaurants to attract visitors. With few participants and scattered resources, including farmland and a short coastline, the concept “Half Village, Half Field, Half Sea” reflects these constraints.
Visual Identity. How can scattered houses be transformed into a unified visual identity that stands out and attracts visitors? The design uses arched roofs to unify the fragmented farmhouses into a cohesive whole. Visible from afar across farmland and coastline, these dramatic forms feature striking curved facades up close. Inspired by split bamboo stems stored by locals, the roofs echo the surrounding bamboo forests.
Use Scenarios .The design connects several central farmhouses into a public cluster with a rural art museum and reception center. The wings are dedicated to dining and hotel. These spaces surround a small square, which opens to expansive farmland that extends to the coastline. Together, these diverse functions create a small coastal resort ecosystem.
Renovation Techniques. The farmhouses are expanded with steel structures, metal roofing, and perforated panels for shading, using local stone. The contrast between rugged and refined elements highlights the village’s renewed vitality.
