Lianzhuang Commercial and Office Complex

The site is located at the corner of two main roads. Because a metro line under construction runs beneath the site, the metro company planned to build a metro access nearby. Grasping this opportunity, investors intended to build here a commercial complex hosting shopping, recreation and office. This irregular site is an open space framed by surrounding streets and residential buildings. There are several bus stations around, so that residents here usually take the open area as a shortcut to reach their bus. The design not only encouraged this pedestrian shortcut, but also aimed at attracting metro passengers into the site. An open, rather than a closed commercial community was the ambition of architects.

The layout is consisted of cubes with different sizes, between which many small lanes convenient for pedestrian flows come into being, adding more frontage space for retail. In the middle of the site there is a large sunken-plaza functioning as metro access. This sunken-plaza would not only reduce the stress of pedestrian flow on the main road, but also vitalize the commercial complex, bringing more business opportunities. The upper floors of the commercial podium are connected with passages, with which two high-rise office buildings are also linked. Seen from the urban interface, instead of a closed frontage the building complexes open up and whet the curiosity of pedestrians to drop in.
